Here are some photos of a wooden yacht that was given
to my father which would make it about 70 years old.
Name of boat: GLEDE
Measurments :
Hull length 27"
Widest part of deck 6"
Keel to deck level 8"
Height of mast 34" from deck
Bow sprit 12"
Main sail 19"
As a lad 10/11 years I used to sail the yacht with my father on Portishead
Lake Nr Bristol. It would take in a lot of water as the hatch was not water
tight.I`m now 62years old. Hope I have got the age correct.
Regards Alan
Clearly a commercial model, though a rather big one. The bermuda rig places
it after 1918, though the hull form is one that could have, and probably did
exist before 1914. The weighted rudder is a system that goes back to the mid
19th century, but persisted on commercial models well into the 20s and possibly
30s.
A visitor to the site from Australia suggested that it might be a Gamages
model, because of the fittings. I can't comment on that because I have never,
to my knowledge, seen one in the flesh. We should bear in mind that Gamages,
like other retailers, bought in models from a variety of sources which changed
over time. A Gamages catalogue of 1913 makes clear that the model boats offered
are from a number of different sources.
