Ryde Yacht

We received this model from someone who was given it as a kid some 60 odd years ago. Due to various mishaps all fittings have been lost and the original deck replaced leaving us with the hull with ballast but no rudder, a mast and a new deck (which has no holes to signify location of any fittings). The previous owner believes this model used to be sailed on the Ryde ponds on the isle of wight.

We are trying to restore this to a sailable condition but with the information we have we are somewhat stuck as to what rigging size to go with. It originally had a bow sprit, but we have no knowledge of its length, nor do we know the length the boom would have been. Would you be able to assist us in identifying this model design and if possible provide us with some direction as to how we could go about designing a new rig plan for this model and getting it constructed.

Dimensions:
Length: 154cm
Width: 32.4cm
Deck to Keel: 39.5cm
Mast: 215cm (we think about 9cm would have been below deck)
Boom: As far as we can tell was about 198cm from the top of the mast.
Ballast: approx 6 kilos

Please contact us if you require any further information.

Thank you,
Mark

This is without question a 10-rater probably dating from the 1920s. The rig would have been very similar to that for XPDNC in our rating rules history pages. You need to get the water line off to calculate the sail area you are allowed. Before 1923, sail area was the actual area of cloth, after, the mainsail, plus 85% of the fore triangle, as in the International Rule.

If you want more detail on how the fittings and such would have looked, come back to me direct. Russell Potts
